Area Attractions

Ardee is a wonderful place to pause in your journey between Dublin and Belfast. The town boasts a fine golf course and fishing and horseback riding are available nearby. Touring nearby Carlingford is a delightful activity, as is a day at the sea (Ardee is only 15 miles from the nearest shore).

This part of Ireland has been continuously inhabited for at least the last 5,500 years. Some of the earliest indications of human habitation exist in the nearby Boyne Valley. The famous passage grave, Newgrange, should not be missed. Established around 3,500 B.C., it is nestled in the nearby Boyne Valley along with more than 30 prehistoric monuments in the area, including standing stones, barrows, and enclosures.

If you prefer more recent history, visit the site of the Battle of the Boyne (1690). There are castles, ruined and otherwise, throughout the Louth countryside. In fact, Ardee is home to its own Norman castle, currently undergoing restoration, which dates from the twelfth century.
